What is Community Solar?

Community Solar was established in Illinois in 2016 through the The Future Energy Jobs Act. This program enables homeowners and renters in Illinois to support new clean energy projects, lower emissions in their community, and receive guaranteed saving on their electricity.

Common Energy works with clean energy developers across the state to provide clean energy at a discount to the public. When you sign up with Common Energy, energy from the clean energy facility shows up as a credit on your electricity bill, lowering your energy cost.

1

Energy from the sun is converted into clean electricity by the community solar farm.

2

This clean electricity is connected to the utility, replacing fossil fuels.

3

Electricity flows as normal from your utility through the broader electrical grid to your home.

4

Anyone who signs up supports new clean energy and receives savings every month on their electricity bill!

FAQs

How does the program work?

Simple. Many states have enacted community solar legislation to enable more clean energy to be connected to the grid. To encourage people to sign up, each subscriber receives a monetary incentive that lowers your electricity bill each month.

What is my environmental impact with Common Energy?

You will prevent between 6,000-15,000 pounds of carbon emissions each year, depending on your utility and your electricity usage.  Over the lifetime of a project this equates to preventing 120,000-300,000 pounds of carbon emissions. This is a direct reduction of emissions and pollution in your community!

faq icon
How much will I save?

Your savings will vary based on how much electricity you use. For most households, the monthly savings is between $5-$20.

faq icon
Am I actually supporting new clean energy?

Yes.  Unlike many companies who simply purchase Renewable Energy Credits, when you sign up with Common Energy you help bring new clean energy projects to the grid.  These projects directly reduce emissions in your community.

Does Common Energy have a Give Back Program?

Yes!  And we love getting help signing up friends and family members for lower cost clean electricity!

We currently offer a $50 gift card for each friend you refer that gets connected. Refer 10 friends and we will provide you with one full year of solar energy at no cost!

Yes, we’re proud to say we do!  For each person who signs up under the VMware partnership, Common Energy will make a $25 charitable donation to one of VMware’s non-profit partners.
