Because Common Energy allows you to lock in substantial savings on your utility bill while also lowering your carbon footprint. And best of all — it only takes a few simple steps. That means you get the peace of mind of knowing you’re making smarter environmental and financial decisions, without having to deal with the hassle of installation and setup.
New laws in many states – including New York, Massachusetts, and Minnesota – now require that electric utilities allow other companies to directly funnel clean energy to both companies and individuals. Once you sign up, Common Energy works with your utility provider to connect you to affordable clean energy. Worry not – this all happens in the background, so it’ll be a seamless process on your end.
When you sign up with Common Energy, your newly sourced clean electricity will appear on your existing electricity bill as a credit. Once you receive that credit, Common Energy will invoice you for that same electricity at a discount, which is typically 10% cheaper than your traditional utility rate. As a result, you can transition to clean energy and save money as soon as you are connected.
Of course! Here’s how it would work: let’s say you currently use 1,000 kWh of electricity a month and your electricity costs $0.10/kWh. In that context, if you’re in New York, NYSEG would send you a bill for $100. Once you connect to Common Energy, we’ll source that 1,000kWh of electricity from a clean energy project at a discounted price. That clean electricity will show up as a $100 credit on your NYSEG bill, bringing your total balance to $0. Once that’s done, Common Energy will charge you for that same electricity but charge you 10% less, which means you’ll be paying $90 and saving $10 every month. Add those monthly savings up and you could save thousands of dollars by simply signing up!
A typical household consumes approximately 10,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity each year. Depending on your utility’s energy source, each household emits between 12,000 and 15,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year when they use utility power. The moment you are connected to a Common Energy, all of our energy is 100% clean. This reduces your emissions decrease by 80-90%, preventing 9,600 – 13,500 pounds of carbon emissions every year.
Getting you connected to a clean energy project typically takes between 1 and 3 months, depending on your utility. Once you sign up, we provide your account number to your utility. There is no disruption or change in service to your account. We will simply notify you when the clean energy is flowing to you.
